For me, big change is exciting and self selected but it can be a long arduous slog. So when I listen to music in these kinds of times I tend to gravitate towards songs or lines in songs that help to give some perspective or reinforcement to keep plugging along.
While there are probably hundreds of examples, here are some songs that contain at least a glimpse of the experience of wanting to stop, break free, and move on (besides their other themes). These are just sampled from scrolling through my GuitarTabs app. I’d probably list another 20 if I took a deep dive into many of the other albums I’ve experienced. Some have just a line, some a whole verse, some a theme that is relevant.
These are not travel songs per se, but have some aspect pertaining to movement towards or away from something. I put them in alphabetical order because that’s a reasonable convention to employ.
- Acoustic Motorbike, Luka Bloom
- Angel of Harlem, U2
- Counting Stars, One Republic
- Curbside Prophet, Jason Mraz
- Find the River, R.E.M.
- Fly Away, The Living End
- Landslide, Fleetwood Mac
- Man in the Mirror, That other guy
- On the Road Again, Willie Nelson
- Opportunity, Pete Murray
- Road to Nowhere, Talking Heads
- See the World, Gomez
- Six Months in a Leaky Boat, Split Enz
- Steve McQueen, Cheryl Crow
- The Logical Song, Supertramp
- The Way, Fastball
- World on a String, Neil Young
If you are looking for something in music its always good to experience the whole song, even album, and attend to its elements. The end of a song presents a decision. The effect of a song can present a dilemma. This is probably why music has survived as a phenomenum over the eons, and why we listen to it.
But on the flip side of that, just one line can shake your life into action…
Get up, stand up.
