South America – October 2nd to November 1st, 2018
This month we based ourselves in southeastern Perú, using public transport and doing a considerable amount of walking. Having no car at all this month was refreshing to say the least – we shed all concerns about fuel prices, maintenance, driving fatigue, navigation, and car insurance. Public transport and walking were the main modes of transport in the region, with much variety experienced.
Our budget was closer to target this month ($155/day), which was a relief after expensive second and third months in the US. You can see the budget fluctuations on the 365 DATA page. The big expense this month was actually the bookings for next month’s (November) flights and accommodations. This will probably be a pattern for future months – mostly to ensure we can get plans in place for three people at cheaper costs. (There will be a future post on this topic in our Tips and Advice section.)
Perú? Wow! We arrived here on the 27th September and after the first few days we were hooked. We ignored advice about not going to Cusco immediately due to the high elevation. Clearly the living at Colorado altitude benefits had faded over the last few months. We huffed and puffed our way around for the first week, then things like walking got easier! We were in Peru for a full month and could fill another month easily.
We ended the month with a transition into Bolivia via Copacobana on the southeast edge of lake Titicaca, and made it into La Paz for Halloween.
